BRAINABILITY provides therapeutic services to children between the ages of 18 months to 13 years who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD). But just as importantly, we serve the families and caregivers of those with ASD. We are your resource and partner on this journey and are here to help you by designing and implementing the most appropriate plan for you and your family.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is not one size fits all

Our philosophy is that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) TREATMENT is not one size fits all. Every individual is affected differently because its not a single disorder but Autism is diagnosed when the child has several possible disorders rolled into one complex set of challenges. This is why BRAINABILITY is proud to offer services for a broad spectrum of challenges that form a part of this disorder, and hence we focus solely on ASD.

We are a full-service provider

While we understand that there are many additional behavioral, neurological and psychological disorders outside of autism spectrum disorder, our focus, however, is on providing you with full services around AUTISM. Our team of licensed health professionals provide comprehensive, evidence-based autism assessments and diagnosis, Treatment and Therapy, in addition to on-going assessments and evaluations.

We work with you to provide assessment and treatment. As each ASD client is different, so are the treatment plans. From center-based and in-home programs to online sessions, to skills development and occupational therapy, our behavior therapists and licensed health professionals are here to support you.

ENGAGEMENT THERAPY

It's more than just playing with toys

Play therapy is a form of counseling or psychotherapy that uses play to assess, prevent, or treat psychosocial challenges. Although play therapy can be used with adults, it’s most commonly used with children. From the outside, play therapy looks like it's just about having fun with toys. However, research shows play therapy is effective in treating a variety of mental health issues and behavior disorders. Up to 71 percent of children referred to play therapy experience positive change.

Play is a child’s way of learning and an outlet for his innate need of activity. It is his business or his career. In it he engages himself with the same attitude and energy that we engage ourselves in our regular work. For each child it is a serious undertaking not to be confused with diversion or idle use of time. Play is not folly. It is purposeful activity.

THERAPEUTIC LISTENING

Listening is a function of the entire brain and goes well beyond stimulating the auditory system. It is a voluntary act. Active listening is dynamic and continually adapting. Listening requires the desire to communicate and the ability to focus the ear on certain sounds selected for discrimination and interpretation. An individual actively listens and directs attention to sounds in the environment with the whole body.

Therapeutic Listening is a comprehensive, multi-faceted sound-based approach that involves much more than just the ears. Like other sensory systems, the auditory system does not work in isolation. Neurologically it is connected to all levels of brain function and as a result it has a vast range of influence. How we listen impacts not only our overall physiology, but also our behavior.

Unlike other listening therapy programs, Therapeutic Listening programs are not formulaic, and cannot be mapped out at the beginning of therapy. Instead, they are more like a dialogue between therapist and client where progressions are based on practical guidelines and on how the client responds to each music selection. Therapeutic Listening is organized to empower the practitioner to use clinical reasoning skills to determine the most appropriate album selection for each client based upon the Therapeutic Listening parameters.

Our Verbal and Vocalization Protocol with Forbrain® helps in improving speech, enhancing clarity and articulation, Reading and Writing Skills, because with greater clarity of sound reception and more efficient processing, comprehension of the written word is greatly improved. With our exercises and repetitive use of your voice, trains your brain thus increasing verbal and short-term memory.

OCCPATIONAL/PEDIATRIC PHYSIOTHERAPY

MOVEMENT IS LIFE and MOTOR SKILLS ARE CRUCIAL FOR DEVELOPMENT

Occupational therapy (OT) is a branch of health care that helps people of all ages who have physical, sensory, or cognitive problems. OT can help them regain independence in all areas of their lives. Occupational therapists help with barriers that affect a person's emotional, social, and physical needs. To do this, they use everyday activities, exercises, and other therapies. Our Pediatric occupational therapy provides support to infants, toddlers, children and youth, as well as to their families in a variety of settings.

Occupational therapy (OT) is viewed as critical, since the longer a child goes without mastering the skills required for success and independence, the more the problem can compound as they get older. Some of the general developmental areas they address include cognitive skills, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, self-care tasks and social skills. Occupational development has been defined as ‘the gradual change in occupational behaviours over time, resulting from the growth and maturation of the individual in interaction with the environment’ There are four fundamental aspects of occupational development:
(1) Intentional actions
(2) Mechanisms for generating occupational behaviors
(3) Socio-cultural niche – children are more inclined to imitate culturally relevant occupations
(4) Engagement in occupation as conditions for developmental changes

COGNITIVE EXPRESSION THERAPY

MINDFULNESS ALSO LAYS FOUNDATION FOR OUR MINDSET!

The ability to understand emotion in others is essential for the healthy development of all mammals. It guides response and decision making to social cues (e.g., aggression) and enhances capacity to develop social bonds and to nurture. Autism is the prototype disorder of social dysfunction. One of the key impairments is an inability to respond appropriately to social cues, including failure to accurately interpret facial expressions. Face-processing and emotion recognition impairments have been confirmed by cognitive, behavioral, and neuroimaging studies, across both auditory and visual sensory modalities. These are specific impairments related to social cognition, which are likely to be heritable. They are believed to play a key role in the failure to acquire social skills across developmental stages and are prognostic factors in early childhood for later diagnosis and for functioning in social settings.

At BrainAbility, we use evidence based treatments and therapies to help children on the autism spectrum learn to understand emotions and also be able to be aware and understand their own emotion and express it without adversely affecting them or anyone around them. Emotional Awareness and Cognitive Expression Therapy is just such protocol we use with great success.

Transauricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation

POLYVAGAL BENEFITS THAT IS ALL ENCOMPASING

Vagus nerve stimulation has been shown to increase global neural plasticity in the cortex. In several research studies, children with autism who were treated with tVNS showed improvement in cognitive function, behavior, and seizure frequency. The authors of this article summarize the research evidence that suggests tVNS is a safe and promising treatment for Autism when combined with other therapies that can expedite the improvements!

This is a technique where an electrical current is applied to the vagus nerve - a nerve that runs between the brain and many areas of the body, including the heart, gastrointestinal tract, and skin. The vagus nerve has important physical and emotional effects in the body and helps the body to achieve balance between states of stress (“fight or flight”) and states of relaxation (“rest and digest”).

Our tVNS treatment comes combined with the whatever the biggest challenge for your child is example tVNS + Engagement Therapy, etc. tVNS treatment only renders miraculous improvements when combined with the right therapies.

Stimulates and Activates the Autonomic Modulation

Increases parasympathetic activity and decreases sympathetic activity.

Influences and Optimizes Neurotransmitters

Influences the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Enhances and Provokes Neuroplasticity

Encourages change in the brain’s organization and forms new neural connections that can become a new normative baseline.

Reduces and Modulates Inflammation

Decreases in inflammatory cytokines via a neural reflex.
